Water’s Edge Canopy
2015

In this project, we partnered with a GED class from a local community organization, Henry Street Settlement, to create an outdoor classroom at the river’s edge. We led a series of STEM workshops with the students covering site analysis concepts and material properties, and then met again for a charette to develop ideas for the design. The canopy was constructed of rebar supported by steel posts anchored to the pier’s bulkhead. Reflective shade cloth, typically used in greenhouses, was stretched between the rebar fronds to create shade, and colored flags suspended over the water to further draw attention to the park. The GED class returned to the pier after the canopy was constructed for a final class next to the river.
