Shade Pavilion
2013

A central shade and classroom pavilion was one of the first elements built on the Paths to Pier 42 interim park site. Wire cables were strung between steel armatures welded atop two shipping containers. Billboards were cut down, repurposed into flags and strung onto the cables. The flags, designed to move freely in the riverside breeze, created an audio and visual manifestation of the site conditions. Height was important: the park could be seen from many vantage points in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The masts of the pavilion served as a beacon to draw people to the new public space.

In the pavilion’s second season, a local teaching artist collaborated with a group of students to create a new set of flags that were installed on the cables. When seen all together, the flags represented a mural painted by the students.
