Paths to Pier 42
2013-2016
Programming, design, and construction of an interim park on a former shipping pier on the East River in lower Manhattan. This multi-year project, organized by a coalition of local community organizations, included a framework for community engagement in the design process. Our roles included co-lead on site strategy design, design-build architect, and one of a number of installation artists. Given the temporary nature of the park, our goal was to create low-tech, cost effective interventions that improved the park each year. As installation artists, we created a shade pavilion, an entry tunnel, and a classroom canopy. These temporary interventions were also considered test-fits, allowing the coalition and partners the opportunity to test park components before providing recommendations for the permanent park. Each summer, the coalition organized a series of temporary programs to sustain engagement, bringing the otherwise unused space to life.
